IRS gives nonprofits in 27 Florida counties hit by Hurricane Isaias until Feb. 8 to file their annual returns
The postponement, announced Oct. 14, covers Form 990 series returns and other deadlines from Oct. 9 through Feb. 7 for organizations based in the Panhandle and Big Bend counties named by FEMA. A separate Alabama order runs to Feb. 4.
Washington. Tax exempt organizations based in 27 Florida counties struck by Hurricane Isaias have until Feb. 8, 2027, to file federal returns that fall due during the storm's aftermath, the Internal Revenue Service said on Oct. 14.
The relief follows an emergency declaration by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, number 3655-EM, and covers Baker, Bay, Calhoun, Citrus, Columbia, Dixie, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gilchrist, Gulf, Hamilton, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Levy, Liberty, Madison, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Suwannee, Taylor, Wakulla, Walton and Washington counties. It applies to deadlines falling on or after Oct. 9, when the storm began, and before Feb. 8.
What it covers for nonprofits
The IRS names "annual information returns of tax-exempt organizations" among the returns postponed, whether their original or extended due date falls in that window. An organization qualifies when its principal place of business is in one of the counties. On the agency's own table of due dates, that window takes in the Nov. 15 extended deadline for groups whose tax year ends Dec. 31, and the first deadline for years ending June 30, July 31 and Aug. 31.
Quarterly payroll returns due Nov. 2 and Feb. 1 also move to Feb. 8. Payroll tax deposits do not: penalties on deposits due from Oct. 9 to Oct. 25 are waived only if the deposits are made by Oct. 26. Information returns in the W-2, 1099 and related series are not postponed unless Revenue Procedure 2018-58 lists them.
The IRS applies the relief automatically to taxpayers whose address of record is in the covered area. Relief workers with a recognized government or philanthropic organization assisting in the area also qualify, as do organizations outside it whose records needed to meet a deadline are inside it; those must call IRS Special Services to ask for it. Anyone who receives a late filing or payment penalty notice for a postponed deadline is told to call the number on the notice.
Alabama has its own dates
In a separate release the same day, the IRS gave taxpayers in 40 Alabama counties until Feb. 4, 2027, for deadlines falling on or after Oct. 7. Penalties there are waived on deposits made by Oct. 22.
Both releases note a new law, the Disaster Related Extension of Deadlines Act, Public Law 119-64, under which a disaster postponement now counts as an extension when the IRS calculates how much tax can be refunded, giving affected taxpayers more time to claim a refund or credit.
