Austin. Nonprofits and local government agencies in Texas that provide direct services to veterans can apply until Dec. 2 for an estimated $31 million in grants from the state's Fund for Veterans' Assistance, Gov. Greg Abbott's office announced on Oct. 5.

The fund is administered by the Texas Veterans Commission. Its application portal opened at 5 p.m. Central time on Oct. 2 and closes at 5 p.m. Central time on Dec. 2. The grants are for the commission's 2028 funding period.

The terms of this round

The governor's office listed four rules as new for the 2028 funding period. The grant term is 24 months. Awards range from a minimum of $50,000 to a maximum of $600,000. An applicant may apply for and receive up to three grants, and a county government may receive up to four, including a Veteran Treatment Court grant.

The commission awards the grants in five categories: General Assistance, Housing for Texas Heroes, Veterans Mental Health, Veterans Treatment Courts, and Veteran County Service Offices. The request for applications, the eligibility rules, webinars and answers to frequent questions are on the commission's grants page for applicants.

What the fund has paid for

Since 2009 the commission has awarded more than $400 million through more than 1,790 grants from the fund, according to the governor's office. The grants have supported housing modification, rental assistance and homelessness prevention; mental health care, experiential therapeutic services and service dogs; legal aid and transportation; food, financial assistance and assistive technology; and vocational and trade skills training.

The announcement followed the commission's 2026 Grants Across Texas tour, at which its commissioners and staff presented more than $40 million in grants from the fund to 160 organizations that serve veterans from El Paso to Beaumont, the governor's office said.

The commission also keeps a directory in which veterans can find organizations in their area that receive grants from the fund.

“Every grant extends our mission so that no veteran stands alone when it comes to home repair, mental health resources, trade skills, and other vital services.”

Laura Koerner, chairwoman of the Texas Veterans Commission
